Manchester City Start Strong
Manchester City attack with elan, race past Sunderland 5-3 Premier League: Sunderland at Manchester City, September 20, 2026 Manchester City entered a high-scoring encounter against Sunderland, which included eight goals and both sides’ attacking potential. City triumphed over a nerve-wracking contest to take all three points.
City took the lead in the 9th minute through Enzo Fernndez. Sunderland quick response was expected as Brian Brobbey equalised three minutes later. Sunderland demonstrated they weren’t going to sit back against the home side.
Both Teams Trade Goals
Rayan Cherki put City in front again in the 29th minute. Again the reaction from Sunderland was rapid. Brobbey netted his second of the evening in the 33rd minute to level the scoring at 2-2.
The game maintained a frantic tempo. Chances went up and down the field, while both defences were under constant pressure from the forwards. The first half contained four goals and much excitement.
Semenyo Gives City the Advantage
City regained the advantage right before the break. City leap ahead at 43rd-minute goal from Antoine Semenyo.
The return of the game saw Semenyo once more excel himself. In the 57th minute he scored to complete his double and extend Manchester City’s lead to 2.
Sunderland, though, was not to be beaten. Two minutes later, Brian Brobbey finished his hat-trick to pull the Black Cats to within 4-3. His three goals kept Sunderland in the game and now kept the pressure on the City defence.
Haaland Seals the Victory
Finally at the 81 minutes the champion struck. Erling Haaland scored the goal of 5-3, ended with a cross by Joko Gvardiol.
The opportunity was originally disallowed for offside. But after a VAR check the decision was reversed and the goal was given. Haaland’s strike saw City get the breathing room they craved in the final minutes.
The strike also saw Haaland achieve his goal tally against every single Premier League club he’d played before, with the Black Cats the 25th club he’d faced.
Manchester City Maintain Perfect Start
The success saw Manchester City record their fifth win from five Premier League games. So City had been able to retain their perfect start and were three points clear at the summit at that stage of the campaign.
Brodvev’s treble failed to earn Sunderland a point, but was one of the highlights of their performance. Semenyo scored two goals and Haaland netted deep into stoppage time for City.
A Thrilling Premier League Encounter
All in all the 5-3 was an exciting Premier League encounter. Manchester City demonstrated their attacking prowess, whereas Sunderland continued to battle until the very end.
Eight goals from City, two from Semenyo, a hat-trick from Brobbey and a late winning strike from Haaland made for a memorable game. City can be pleased with yet another key win as they chase more success in their Premier League campaign.
