England are preparing for a busy UEFA Nations League campaign under Thomas Tuchel. The Three Lions are set to face Spain, Czechia and Croatia during a packed international window. The team will play four matches between September 21 and October 6, 2026.
The Nations League campaign comes after England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey. It gives Tuchel a chance to test his squad and build a strong team for the next international cycle. England will also look to develop better combinations as they face strong European opposition.
England Name 27-Man Squad
Tuchel had named a 27-man squad for the Nations League matches. Some players made a return to the England squad after previous international gatherings, as more familiar names like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze also played key roles in the squad.
The squad consisted of some potentially new options as well, with Trent Alexander-Arnold back with the squad and players like Rio Ngumoha and Myles Lewis-Skelly also making the cut.
But England were quickly struck by injuries ahead of their first game.
Five Players Withdraw
Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Tino Livramento and Kobbie Mainoo to pull out of the squad.
Palmer’s withdrawal was of significant concern as the 22-year-old had been recalled to the fold after being absent from England’s 2026 World Cup selection. The Chelsea striker had begun the new club season in fine form before a muscle injury prevented him from participating for England.
Rice, Rashford, Mainoo and Livramento. Accordingly, Tuchel was forced to change his plan.
Garner and Gibbs-White Receive Call-Ups
Then, James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White were summoned to the England team after the withdrawals.
Lee had already earned his first appearance for England at senior level in March 2026, whilst Gibbs-White had six internationals under his belt prior to the recent international break. Their presence added further options for Tuchel in the attacking midfield areas.
The changes also opened the door for other players to accept more responsibility through the international window.
Spain Provide a Major Opening Test
Sept. 26, 2023 England will play their first game in the competition, against Spain, at Wembley Stadium.
Spain went into the game as world champions, with the opening match a big test for the German coach’s team. England were seeking a positive start to their new Nations League campaign after their World Cup effort.
Tuchel was also keen for his players to have a defined style of play. The German coach had also called for intensity and their aggression to be switched on during matches.
Four Matches in a Busy Window
Following Spain, England were due to fly to Prague to play Czechia on 29 September.
Next up, the Three Lions will play Croatia at Rijeka on October 3 before returning to Wembley for a second clash with Czechia on October 6.
With a busy schedule on the cards, England would need to deal with multiple games in a brief period of time. The depth of the squad was therefore set to be crucial.
Tuchel Looks to Build England’s Next Chapter
Tuchel is hoping that these fixtures will give him competitive games that can help him prepare his squad.
This provides a chance for youngsters and players with not as much experience to shine.
In addition, the games present England with an opportunity to experiment with various partnerships against good European sides.
Tuchel will want his team to be disciplined in possession and dogged and aggressive when without it. The Nations League is therefore yet another important stage in England’s progress under their new manager.
