England have been hit by a major squad blow ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixtures. Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Tino Livramento and Kobbie Mainoo have all left the squad through injury.
Seven of the Blues’ players in the squad are now set to be disappointed with manager Thomas Tuchel now having the task of making the changes in the week that England face three Nations League games. England are scheduled to take on Spain, Czechia and Croatia during the international period.
Five Players Withdraw From England Squad
Another player who had been omitted from England’s 2026 World Cup selection but was reintroduced to Tuchel’s set-up was Cole Palmer. The issue is unlikely to keep him out of the international breaks, but he has been sidelined with a slight injury to a muscle.
Another key player missing out is Declan Rice. The Arsenal midfielder has been a staple in the England side, however, the Three Lions have chosen to rest him so he will not feature for his country.
Elsewhere, the Manchester United pair of Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo have also pulled out. Rashford suffered a problem in Manchester United’s game against Fulham and Mainoo was withdrawn in the same fixture.
The fifth player to part ways with the squad is Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento. The England Under-21 international was hampered by a calf injury before suffering another setback shortly before the international break.
James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White Called Up
Since then, after the five departures, Tuchel has brought England duo James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White into the squad.
Garner gives another option in central midfield while Gibbs-White offers Tuchel another attacking midfield option following the withdrawal of Palmer. Both were expected to join the squad at St George’s Park.
Garner, meanwhile, had already earned his first two senior England caps in March 2026. Gibbs-White has been capped six times by the Three Lions prior to this call-up.
England’s Nations League Schedule
Q7. When did England’s new Nations League campaign kick off? England’s new Nations League campaign began with a home fixture against Spain at Wembley Stadium on 26 September.
The Three Lions will then head to Prague to take on Czechia on 29 September. This will be followed by a trip to Rijeka to play Croatia on October 3.
The final date of the international window will be another clash between England and Czechia at Wembley on October 6.
Tuchel Faces Selection Changes
The five removals also will force Tuchel to rethink his approach to many spots on the team.
Palmer’s absence limits England’s options in attacking midfield. Rice and Mainoo would have been another dimension in the middle of the park and Rashford’s withdrawal takes another option away from the attack.
England boss: Livramento setback limits manager’s defensive options. But there is still plenty of experience to call on for the Three Lions, who have Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers.
Therefore, the international window allows the replacement players and other players in the squad to take a larger responsibility.
England Begin a New Nations League Campaign
Team News: England rejoin Nations League top tier for 2026-27 Team news England rejoined the top tier of the Nations League for the 2026-27 campaign. The international side were preparing for the new edition with a 27-man squad, but the five withdrawals due to injuries meant changes ahead of the first game.
Tuchel will be disappointed by the absences, with four fixtures to go during the longer international break. Yet there is still a lot of international experience in the squad.
Additionally, the call-ups of Garner and Gibbs-White provide a chance for both players to feature at senior level.
England now go back to their Nations League campaign with a new look squad as Tuchel seeks to manage his players and keep up the team’s preparations for the remaining games.
