INTRODUCTION
England showed their dominance in the first T20I of the series played at Southampton on 15 September 2026 against Sri Lanka. Brook continued his assault and brought up his century off just 42 balls. It was his second T20I hundred and the fourth-quickest hundred in T20 internationals by an England batter.
He managed to remain not out scoring 114 runs from 49 balls, with 10 boundaries and 6 sixes. It was also Brooks’ highest T20I score. England were at 254/4 after 20 overs because of Brooks’ splendid end, which meant 255 runs were needed to win.
Sri Lanka Struggle in the Chase
Sri Lanka’s response to the target was always going to be tough. The visitors lost three wickets during the powerplay and they were 32/3. England’s bowlers kept pounding away at the Sri Lankan batting order as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals.
Sri Lanka were 71/5 at the interval. Although they attempted to revive the innings, they could not get close to England’s enormous score. Ultimately, they were all out for 135 in 19 overs. Sonny Baker was among England’s top bowlers, taking 3/12.
England Take the Lead in the Series
This meant England have a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series, with the 119-run win also bringing England’s winning streak in T20s against Sri Lanka to 13 matches. Harry Brook was named Player of the Match following his incredible century, which England will have been very encouraged by at the start of the series.
The second T20I will be held at the Cardiff on September 17 and the third match on September 19 in Manchester. England will now look to capitalise on their good first effort and Sri Lanka will hope to bounce back in the second fixture.
